Message from the Scientific Director: July - August 2024

We are now three months into our new mandate at ICRH. It has been an exciting time with many changes. Now in our new quarters at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Center in Montréal, we have hit the ground running.

In May and June, we met with our scientific community. We attended the CHF Alliance (Canadian Heart Function Alliance) annual meeting, we presented at the Ottawa Heart Institute and attended the Brain-Heart Interconnectome State of the Science Summit in Ottawa. The science is exciting and innovative. We are looking forward to continuing to meet with ICRH research community over the next months as part of our pan-Canadian Knowledge Exchange tour. We had our first IAB meeting with a group of outstanding researchers from across Canada doing cutting-edge research and winning distinguished lectureship awards. We shared our upcoming research priority planning exercise, and we are looking forward to meeting with them again in September. Congratulations to the nine research teams funded through CIHR's Team Grant in Lung Health! ICRH is thrilled to co-lead this initiative with the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research to understand how the air we breathe impacts our health, ranging from the effects of wildfires to vaping to inflammation.

As part of our new funding activities, we will have the first (ever) priority announcement in the area of cardiovascular health across the lifespan through the Fall 2024 CIHR Project Grant competition. ICRH is also thrilled to collaborate with the Institute of Aging for the launch of the second stage of the Phase III Research Teams funding opportunity of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging with our priority area focused on Cardiovascular Disease and Age-Related Cognitive Changes.

We are building an outstanding ICRH team, we are already funding innovative research programs and we are increasingly inspired by the excellent researchers who make up our community. We are expanding our IAB to amplify our links to the science community as we look forward to more opportunities that will be announced in September – stay tuned!

Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

Dr. Ariane Marelli,
On behalf of our ICRH team!
